I am not sure who if anybody will read this email. If you happen to read it, I hope you have the time and interest to respond.
I served aboard the USS FOX in June of 1970 when it pulled into Danang and participated in rescuing servicemen and passengers from the Helicopter crash in Danang Harbor. I am now disabled, due to the aggravation of traumatic brain injury.
My reason for writing is simple. Since my retirement as Counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Veterans Services, and Judge Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of the American Legion, I suffered a heart attack. A new law became effective on or about October, 2010. In short, the law provides that If anybody served at least on day in Vietnam and suffered heart attack, they are eligible for compensation. "service in Vietnam" means either, service in the inland waterways of Vietnam, or being ashore in Vietnam for at least 38 minutes.
I am applying for compensation, because I am convinced I went ashore while my ship was in Danang harbor. Given the extent of my heart ailment, and the eight stents that have been inserted in arteries around my heart. I am seeking corroborating evidence of my going ashore while the USS Fox was in Danang. I do know that on June 25 the Fox entered Danang for a senior staff briefing. During the meeting, while the captain's gig was in the water, a helicopter from VH-1E taking off from hospital ship Sanctuary, (AH-17) lost power and splashed in the harbor. BM# Ronald Wallace, coxswain, and EN3 David Lovenberg, boat engineer, responded to the emergency and sped to the crash site, skillfully rescuing the four crew members and passengers. BM# Wallace received the Navy Achievement Medal and EN# Lovenberg the Navy commendation medal for their heroic efforts. If any shipmates can provide me with information confirming the fact that I went ashore in June 0f 1870, I will receive my compensation.
Hopefully this email will be read by someone who can provide me with evidence of my going ashore while the Fox was in Danang. My traumatic brain injury of 1979, and the subsequent aggravation of that injury while at work, has impaired my memory of what happened 41 years ago. Hopefully, some Fox shipmate can pride some account of my going ashore in June of 1970.
Thank you.
